It is already the end of August! I have spent many hours enjoying nature and a beautiful summer, watching the plants and flowers grow and change. The birds in the area have grown and changed and now the babies are growing and preparing for a move south soon. It is bitter sweet to me. I will miss the warmth of summer, but I will look forward to having more time inside to work on painting.
I have so many great photos to work from and so many great experiences to carry me through our long Canadian winter. That doesn’t mean that I won’t be out with my camara. I go out all year long. I am an avid hiker. I have ice trax in my vehicle and am ready for all weather. Last year I decided to embrace winter, to get out and just see what was out there. The only way for me to do that is to be safe and warm. I saw amazing moments where the sun was shining just right through the snow -covered tree branches giving me amazing shots. The pileated woodpecker was also a frequent visitor while on the trail.
Summer now is quiet; the birds are no longer singing. They quietly flit and zoom through the tree branches. They know their moments here are short. The shorter daylight hours and cooler, longer nights, signal change. The geese are honking around in their groups, but I haven’t seen as many this year. I love that sound. Fall flowers, like the wild asters and goldenrod support the monarch butterflies on their journey. The sound of crows calling through the fog.
Things are different in the conservation areas. I have seen less people this year, except for other photographers that capture the birds and animals. A few years ago, there was an increase in people out enjoying where usually mostly photographers go, but now that has changed again. Less people have been seen out in these areas and the wildlife is mostly undisturbed.
I have seen less insects this year. No grasshoppers, less crickets. It has been eerily quiet.
Now I watch as fall migration quietly, slowly takes place. Everyday is a surprise to what I will see on my day out. Quietly observing what goes on around me. Watching the nature and animals is so important to me, setting up my day to do the more mundane things. I can do them while reminiscing on the experience of what I saw while out photographing it.
Get out and enjoy the seasons changing. You will be glad that you did.
